New Jersey CyberKnife is a cancer treatment facility in Toms River, New Jersey. The center was formed through a partnership between Barnabas Health, a group of physicians in New Jersey and US Radiosurgery/Alliance Oncology. New Jersey CyberKnife is a service of Community Medical Center and part of the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center. The center treats several different types of malignant and benign tumors in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas, prostate, kidney and eye. Lung tumors, brain tumors and prostate cancer are frequently treated diseases at New Jersey CyberKnife.

CyberKnife treatment

Dr. John Adler, a neurosurgeon and endowed professor of neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, invented CyberKnife. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the CyberKnife to treat tumors in the head, neck and upper spine in 1999 and tumors anywhere in the body in 2001.

The CyberKnife treats patients with a procedure called stereotactic radiosurgery, a noninvasive method of treating tumors with high-dose radiation precisely aimed from different angles. It is the world's only robotic radiosurgery system, consisting of a compact linear accelerator - a machine that generates a radiation beam - attached to a highly maneuverable robotic arm.

The CyberKnife system uses the combination of robotics and image guidance technology to deliver concentrated and targeted beams of radiation to tumors and lesions throughout the body. CyberKnife's advanced imaging and tracking system continually updates the tumor's location throughout each treatment procedure, compensating for normal body movements like breathing and ensuring the machine's radiation beams are always locked on the tumor during treatment.

During CyberKnife treatment, patients lie on a treatment table while the machine's robotic arm moves around the body, aiming and firing targeted radiation beams from numerous angles.. Through the use of image guidance cameras, the CyberKnife locates the position of a tumor in the body and uses its robotic arm to deliver highly focused beams of radiation that converge at the tumor. In turn, the tumor receives a cumulative dose of radiation high enough to control or kill the tumor cells while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue surrounding the tumor site.

Most treatment sessions typically last 30 - 90 minutes. The CyberKnife, unlike some stereotactic radiosurgery systems, is able to position a patient without the use of an invasive stereotactic head frame.

The US Radiosurgery Network

In partnership with Community Medical Center, New Jersey CyberKnife at the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center is a US Radiosurgery facility.

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, US Radiosurgery is a division of Alliance Oncology and partners with hospitals and physician groups around the U.S. to develop and operate full-body radiosurgical centers. US Radiosurgery established its position in the stereotactic radiosurgery market with the acquisition of its first treatment facility in Colorado. This was the eighth CyberKnife center in existence in the U.S. at that time.

New Jersey CyberKnife is a member of the US Radiosurgery network of centers, which now includes multiple facilities throughout the United States.

Collectively, the US Radiosurgery network of centers has treated thousands of patients since the opening of the company's first center in 2003. The group of facilities is actively engaged in research, with physicians regularly presenting papers and authoring studies related to the efficacy of CyberKnife treatment for various types of tumors and lesions.
